Nantwich and District Band 5 v 1 Roberts bakery Band
Date: Sunday 19th November 2006
Venue: Shavington Sports Centre
Attendance: 7
Following the issuing of a challenge of a rematch after our 4-3 victory earlier in the year, NDB members once again swapped their instruments for their boots to take part in a chilly (sorry, freezing) game on Sunday 19 November.
Once again the start was a cagey affair, with the Nantwich ‘keeper Chris Thompson being forced into a few smart saves. The action was fairly end to end though, and it was not long before the Evanson trio (Dad Steve and sons Ross and Scott) combined neatly in a move finished off by Scott to put us one up. Around this time NDB made their first change when Sally went off to be substituted by Martin Robinson, who slotted in with Keith Armstrong in defence.
Nantwich soon doubled their lead, once again Scott Evanson putting a fine shot beyond the ‘Robbo’s’ keeper. After that the game became a midfield battle, with some fine efforts by both teams, forcing both keepers to be alert. Shortly after the second goal Stuart Carvey was replaced by MD Stewart Thompson who put in a steady performance down the right hand side.
As the game drew to a close, Scott completed a fine hat trick and took the match ball (it was his ball we played with anyway, so it was only fair!) before Roberts clawed their way back into the game. A long punt forwards caught the NDB defence off guard and left Darlington with a simple chance which ‘keeper Chris could not keep out. At 3-1 up shades of a fight back reminiscent of last time seemed on the cards, but this time Nantwich regrouped, after a few more fine saves by Chris (who’s writing this report…in case you had not noticed!). NDB forced left wing corner which was only half cleared and was returned with interest by Keith Armstrong into the top corner of the net. Keith is proving a handy finisher from a fair way out…it rivalled Ben Rix’s strike the day before for Crewe Alex against Brentford (have I mentioned I’m an Alex fan???). As the game neared the last few minutes Scott put the fifth in, his own personal fourth, to cap a fine all round performance.
Next time, the game will take place in the warmer summer months…or inside. Keep checking for news on a replay on this site.
